BigWig

A Strategic Mythology Card Game Full of Surprises

BigWig by HABA is an exciting trick-taking card game where players compete for the favor of the gods. Combining simultaneous hidden card selection, changing trump suits and dramatic duels, this fast-paced game delivers a unique experience for families and strategy game enthusiasts alike.

Easy to learn yet packed with meaningful decisions, BigWig offers plenty of replayability and rewards clever timing, observation and tactical thinking.

How Does BigWig Work?

At the start of each round, all players secretly choose a card from their hand and reveal it simultaneously. A scoring card determines which colours act as trumps and how many victory points are available for the trick.

The strongest play wins the scoring card, but ties create an unexpected twist. Instead of being awarded immediately, the points are placed beneath the altar, where they remain available for future rounds. This creates increasing tension as the game progresses.

Exciting Holmgang Duels

One of BigWig's most distinctive features is the Holmgang duel system. Players who are trailing behind can challenge opponents directly using special duel cards.

Winning a duel allows a player to claim not only the contested scoring card but potentially all rewards hidden beneath the altar. This catch-up mechanism keeps everyone involved and ensures that no lead is ever completely safe.

Smart Hand Management

Victory depends on more than simply winning tricks. Each player has access to a personal "Mímir's Well" card, allowing them to sacrifice cards and draw replacements. Knowing when to strengthen your hand and when to compete for points is a key part of the game's strategy.

Special effect cards introduce additional surprises by bending the rules, reversing outcomes or creating unexpected opportunities. Every match unfolds differently, encouraging players to adapt their tactics from round to round.
