The Trick-Taking Game Where Second Place Wins
Schadenfreude is an innovative trick-taking card game for 3 to 5 players that turns traditional card game strategy upside down. Instead of aiming for the highest card, players compete to win tricks with the second-highest card of the lead suit.
This unique twist creates fascinating tactical decisions, rewarding careful timing, hand management, and a keen understanding of your opponents’ intentions. Easy to learn yet full of strategic depth, Schadenfreude offers a refreshing experience for both casual players and seasoned card game enthusiasts.
How Do You Play Schadenfreude?
Schadenfreude is a must-follow-suit game with no trump suits. Players must follow the lead suit whenever possible, making every card played an important decision.
The winner of each trick is not the player with the highest card, but the player who played the second-highest card of the lead suit. That player collects their winning card along with any cards that failed to follow suit.
A Clever Duplicate Rank Mechanic
Collected cards are placed in a personal score pile. However, players may only keep one card of each rank. If a player collects a second card of a rank already in their score pile, both cards are immediately discarded.
This creates engaging strategic opportunities. Valuable cards can disappear, unwanted cards can be removed, and players must constantly evaluate which cards are worth collecting.
Negative Cards Add Extra Strategy
Some cards in Schadenfreude have negative values, adding another layer of tactical play. Collecting cards is not always beneficial, and players must carefully balance positive and negative points throughout the game.
A negative card might help reduce your score when needed, while duplicate ranks can be used to eliminate cards that no longer fit your strategy.
Get as Close as Possible to 40 Points
The objective is simple but surprisingly challenging: finish as close as possible to 40 points without exceeding that total. As soon as any player's score rises above 40, the game ends, and the player closest to 40 without going over wins.
This unusual scoring system means that success is not about collecting the most points, but about managing your score carefully across multiple rounds.
