Santa Maria is a streamlined, medium complexity Eurogame in which each player establishes and develops a colony. The game features elements of dice drafting and strategic engine building. The game is low on luck and has no direct destructive player conflict.
At the dawn of the Sixteenth Century, migrants are flocking to the colonies of the New World. With the goal of creating the happiest colony of them all, you will produce goods to establish shipping routes, train scholars for special abilities and send out conquistadors to acquire gold.
In the game Santa Maria you add buildings to your colony by placing tiles on your colony board. You use dice to activate those buildings. The dice represent migrant workers, and each die will activate a complete row of buildings. You must therefore carefully consider where to put new buildings and how efficiently to make use of dice.
